Grade Calculator

Find your overall weighted grade from assignments, tests, and exams.

What is it?

This calculator finds your overall grade by combining multiple assessments — homework, quizzes, midterms, and finals — each weighted by how much it counts toward your final grade.

Formula

Overall % = Σ((Score ÷ Total) × 100 × Weight) ÷ Σ(Weight)

Formula Explanation

Each assessment is converted to a percentage (score divided by total marks), then multiplied by its weight — since a final exam worth 50% of the grade should count far more than a homework set worth 5%. These weighted percentages are summed and divided by the total weight to get the final overall percentage.

Example Calculation

Homework 45/50 (20% weight), Midterm 78/100 (30% weight), and Final 88/100 (50% weight) combine to an overall grade of 85.4% (B).

How to Use

  1. Add a row for each graded assessment (homework, quiz, midterm, final, etc.).
  2. Enter your score and the total marks possible for each one.
  3. Enter the weight (%) that assessment counts toward your final grade.
  4. Click Calculate Grade to see your overall weighted percentage and letter grade.

Benefits

  • Combines any number of assessments with different weights and totals.
  • Automatically converts to a standard letter grade.
  • Warns you if your entered weights don't add up to 100%.

Use Cases

  • Checking your current grade in a class partway through the term.
  • Figuring out roughly what you need on a final exam to reach a target grade.
  • Combining lab, homework, and exam scores that use different point totals.

What Your Result Means

The overall percentage reflects your weighted performance across every assessment entered. The letter grade uses a standard scale (90%+ = A, 80–89% = B, 70–79% = C, 60–69% = D, below 60% = F) — your instructor's actual cutoffs may differ slightly.

Tips

  • Leave a future assessment's score blank and estimate it to see how it would affect your final grade.
  • Confirm your syllabus's exact weight breakdown before relying on this for a final decision.
  • Use consistent "out of" totals if your course reports scores as raw points rather than percentages.

Common Mistakes

  • Entering weights that don't add up to 100%, which can make results harder to sanity-check.
  • Mixing up the score and the total marks columns for an assessment.
  • Assuming a flat average across assessments when they actually carry different weights.

FAQs

What if my weights don't add up to 100%?

The calculator still computes a correct proportional result, but it's best to double-check your course syllabus, since a mismatch often means a typo in one of the weight values.

Can I use this to figure out what I need on my final exam?

Yes — enter your known scores, leave the final exam's score blank or try different values, and recalculate to see what score would produce your target overall grade.

Does this match my school's exact grading scale?

The letter grade uses a common 90/80/70/60 cutoff scale. Some schools use different cutoffs or add +/- grades, so always confirm against your official syllabus.

Can assessments have different point totals, like 20 and 100?

Yes — each assessment is converted to a percentage individually before being weighted, so mixing different point totals works correctly.

Letter grade cutoffs are a common default and may not match your specific school or instructor's scale.
